108 Sun Salutations – An Annual Tradition
Join Myriad for our annual tradition of 108 Sun Salutations in honor of the western New Year! Led by Marta Gruber and Stephanie Schroeder, this two-hour experience will offer a guided journey through 108 Sun Salutations A.
Class will begin with a gentle warm-up. We will start the first few Salutations slowly, offering examples to modify and adjust the Salutations to meet your individual needs. Throughout the class, Students are reminded to take rest, to continue to adap their Salutations, and to make the experience their own. After, enjoy a long savasana to close the practice and to bask in the afterglow of your effort. Upbeat music and a sunny vibe will keep you moving, flowing and breathing!
108 has long been seen as a sacred number — 1 represents new beginnings, 0 represents emptiness, + 8 represents infinity; together these numbers offer a chance to set intention + manifest desires. Start your new year mindfully with this “go at your own pace” moving meditation.
**This class may end a few minutes early or late depending on the speed at which we move. Please note that two-hours is a fairly accurate estimation but may not be exact.

From the ordinary to the auspicious, the number 108 has many important and symbolic meanings in diverse disciplines, ranging from mathematics to religion, spiritual practices to martial arts and, of course, yoga. This practice creates space to breathe in community and become a part of one whole as a moving meditation.
In yoga, 108 is significant of sprirtual completetion. We see the significance however of the number 108 pop up throughout history, beginning in ancient times, within spritual practices, religion, mathematics, astrology, science and even practical applications (There are 108 stitches on a baseball). 1 represents, new beginnings, taking intitative, embarking on a new path. 0 represents emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice. 8 represents abundance, achievement, infinity, the power to manifest desired outcomes. Added together these equal 9 which represents altruism and humanitarianism, encouraging us to share our gifts and abundance with others. Our moving meditation may become devotional offerings to our highest values, intentions and principles. As we practice, we try to stay presently engaged in the moments, letting each moment come and go, inhaling and exhaling. The breath helps us to create tapasic or fiery energy, burning away what we do not need, releasing the ego, our expectations, our judgements, and making space for something new.
Finishing 108 Sun Salutations initially is a difficult task. But once accomplished, you will feel motivated and encouraged. Not only is your physical practice motivated but your mind as well. By stepping out of your comfort zone, trying and finishing something challenging, we will build confidence to begin the New Year with strength. Of course it is not easy to let go of expectations about how your practice should look or feel like. It is not necessary that each individual practices 108 Sun Salutations in the same way. In fact, it doesn’t really matter that you hit all 108. One person may rest more than the other, or individual’s may make same level of adjustment in order to be comfortable. Our yoga practice is always our own. We practice according to our own unique needs and can only start where we are today. Practicing 108 Sun Salutations provides the opportunity to love yourself the way you are by developing self-love and acceptance.
