Quarterly Book Club
Join Myriad Yoga each season as we explore a new book together and its relation to the practice of Yoga. Reading a book alone provides a singular experience. As we gather in community and discuss a book at length, we provide opportunities for new insights, ideas and perspectives!
Join Myriad Yoga for a group discussion of the book Wild Seed by Octavia E. Butler.
Octavia Estelle Butler was an American science fiction writer, one of the best-known among the few African-American women in the field. She won both Hugo and Nebula awards.
“OCTAVIA E. BUTLER was a renowned writer who received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant and PEN West Lifetime Achievement Award for her body of work. She was the author of several award-winning novels including Parable of the Sower, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and was acclaimed for her lean prose, strong protagonists, and social observations in stories that range from the distant past to the far future. Interest in her books has increased enormously since her death as the issues she addressed in her Afrofuturistic, feminist novels and short fiction have only become more relevant. She passed away on February 24, 2006.”
From the acclaimed author of the Earthseed series, Wild Seed is the story of two immortals who chase each other across continents and centuries, binding their fates together and changing the destiny of the human race. “An internationally acclaimed science fiction writer whose evocative, often troubling, novels explore far-reaching issues of race, sex, power and, ultimately, what it means to be human.” – The New York Times
Participants will read the book on their own before September 6th. A full discussion and review of the book will be held together as a group. Myriad recommends that books are acquired through the library, second hand, or purchased through a locally-owned bookstore when possible.

Marta Gruber
Marta has a passion for helping individuals connect with and feel empowered in their own bodies. Their own practice has ebbed and flowed with different emphasis and styles throughout their life, and they feel that the same permission should be offered to their students. She believes that exploration is an important part of finding acceptance in our bodies and that rest is a powerful form of rebellion. It is these beliefs that encourage a sense of softness, playfulness and affirming support with every yoga class they lead.
Whether leading a restorative practice or an active vinyasa flow, Marta strives to bring a down-to-earth, genuine approach to her teaching, hoping to help forge grounded confidence in each student’s practice. With over 18 years of experience practicing yoga, her whimsical sense of humor and vast knowledge of the practice is woven into each class she teaches, opening the door for students to more deeply discover connections between poses, themselves, and the community around them.
